On the heels of it’s win for Best Animated Feature Film at last night’s Golden Globe awards, Frozen is on it’s way to Broadway. This comes as no surprise to me. After all, why hire a killer Broadway songwriting duo to pen the score and book if not to turn it in to a stage musical?
Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger revealed to Fortune Magazine that he is eager for the transition from animation to stage, but doesn’t feel the need to rush the project. With Aladdin set to hit Broadway this spring, Disney Theatrical Productions has some time to work on developing and adapting the animated hit to work on the stage.
The story is not without its theatrical challenges, and it will take some of theatre’s best to recreate the kingdom of Arendelle and Elsa’s ice palace, not to mention the fjord freezing and melting, on stage. Couple that with the creation of a reindeer Sven, lovable snowman Olaf, and guard snow monster Marshmallow, and you have quite a task to undertake! Personally I can’t wait!
Now, I’m really wondering if Broadway Starlette Idina Menzel will reprise her role as Elsa… A girl can dream, right?!
